Taking on the ever-popular Chrysler Pacifica, Toyota Sienna, and Honda Odyssey, the 2019 Kia Sedona is newly redesigned and bringing straight-up competition to the minivan vehicle game. While crossover vehicles have taken a chunk out of the market, many drivers still desire, and demand, the tried and true functionality only a minivan can provide.
Kia debuted their 2019 minivan at the New York Auto Show that was held at the end of March through the beginning of April of this year. The unveiled redesign highlighted Sedona's main upgrades at the show, including an all-new 8-speed automatic transmission, an updated rear entertainment center with dual touchscreens, exterior style modifications, and more.
All Sedonas are already powered by a 3.3-liter V6 with 276 horsepower and 248 pound-feet of torque, but the six-speed automatic transmission has been replaced with an eight-speed design that's smoother and more fuel efficient than the previous unit.
While the exterior enhancements feature a more aggressive front end with reconfigured headlights, a restyled back bumper accented by new chrome trim pieces, new wheel options, and a power sliding door button, the interior is the area that boasts the biggest changes in the realms of entertainment and connectivity.
The Sedona already had Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity in front, but now rear-seat passengers in the Sedona will enjoy Kia's move of switching out the overhead screen for dual 10.1-inch touchscreens with smartphone-mirroring capabilities, mounted on the back of each of the front headrests. The entertainment center is powered by an upgraded dual-core processor, offers wireless Bluetooth headphone connectivity, and the optional Infinity audio kit has been swapped for a Harman/Kardon system. Also, the addition of an optional rear USB port offers convenient access from the third row of seats or the cargo area.
Also revamped in the 2019 Kia Sedona were the instrument cluster with restyled graphics, and the center console with the addition of a wireless USB charger and sunglass holder. Top trim models also include an electronic parking brake.
Already well-equipped in the area of safety, the Sedona includes several driver assistance features such as forward collision warning, adaptive cruise control, rear cross-traffic alert, blind spot warning, and automatic emergency braking. Kia enhanced the 2019 design by adding a driver attention feature that blinks and uses sound alerts to suggest taking a break from the road when the system assesses the driver needs it.
The Kia Sedona versatile seating and cargo arrangement goes unchanged, still offering either seven or eight-passenger setups. Reclining captain's chairs in the two-seat second row come with footrests, and the three-seat second row utilizes Kia's Slide-N-Stow setup delivering more convenient accessibility. The 60/40 split-folding third row is still retractable and stores in the floor for additional cargo space when needed.
The redesigned 2019 Kia Sedona is slated to go on sale before the end of the year. To find out exactly when they will arrive at the dealerships, sign up online to receive updates. Until then, 2018 models are available now in Calgary at Eastside Kia.
