Eastside Kia
The Kia K5 is a direct replacement for the Kia Optima, a mid-size sedan that failed to make much of an impact in the competitive North American market. The new name maybe a little more prosaic, but the same can't be said of the new car. Keeping to the same sedan format, the 2021 Kia K5 offers many exciting improvements across the board over its predecessor, and it's now available for viewing at our Calgary dealership.
The K5 is a car that impresses from the moment you first set eyes on it. The sleek four-door sedan design is a welcome change from the huge number of anonymous SUVs and hatches introduced each year, and its daringly contemporary looks will certainly turn plenty of heads.
The standard K5 is equipped with a 1.6L four-cylinder engine pushing out 180 horsepower and 195lb-ft of torque, an output easily on a par with many larger SUVs. The powertrain is completed by an eight-speed automatic transmission and front-wheel drive as standard, although all-wheel drive is available as an attractive option. This configuration offers peppy performance around the city, with good acceleration from stoplights and neat handling of corners. If the standard model doesn't offer enough grunt for your needs, the forthcoming K5 GT will up the ante with a 2.5L turbo engine making a hefty 290 horsepower and 311lb-ft, paired with a custom-designed eight-speed dual-clutch automatic transmission.
The more powerful GT hasn't yet been officially tested for fuel economy, but the standard trims offer attractive figures of 8.1L / 100km in the city and 6.1L / 100km on the highway. These figures highlight one of the great advantages of the mid-size sedan format compared to larger, more lumbering SUVs: great performance at a lower fuel cost.
The interior of the K5 is immediately impressive, looking far more advanced and luxurious than its price tag would suggest. Depending on the model, expect luxuries like leather upholstery and real wood trims, along with tech features including a customisable 12.3" digital gauge cluster behind the leather-wrapped steering wheel.
Kia is well known for kitting out their cars with a wide range of active safety features, and the 2021 K5 certainly doesn't disappoint. Highway driving is enhanced by lane-keeping assist and a lane following function, combining with the adaptive cruise control for an almost effortless ride with adjustable sensitivity to suit your driving tastes. The forward-collision warning system is more advanced than most and includes intersection scanning to detect left-turn dangers as well as those directly ahead.
Test drive the 2021 Kia K5 from our Calgary location and see for yourself how it combines power, tech, and comfort at a highly affordable price. The mid-size sedan market still has plenty of life in it yet.
